Esther Landau, Flutist & Teacher
Esther has performed as a soloist and chamber musician across the United States. She specializes in performances of new music, having worked directly with such composers as Elliott Carter and Luciano Berio. She performed Mozart's Concerto in D Major with the Mill Valley Philharmonic in 2011, with cadenzas written for her by composer colleagues. Esther played with Citywinds, an acclaimed wind quintet, for over a decade. A regular recitalist, she has performed with the Berkeley Contemporary Music Players, Left Coast Chamber Ensemble, and the Empyrean Ensemble. She is currently on the faculty of the Preparatory Division of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
Ms. Landau's teachers have included Keith Underwood, Julie McKenzie, Floyd Cooley, Robert Willoughby, and Timothy Day. She has participated in masterclasses at Tanglewood and Banff, studying with Doriot Anthony Dwyer, Toshiko Kohno, and Robert Aitken. Ms. Landau received her B.M. at the Oberlin Conservatory and her M.M. at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She continues to learn new things about the flute and flute-playing by attending concerts and masterclasses, as well as studying the Alexander Technique and The Walden School Musicianship Course. For the past 4 years she has been studying the kaval, a Bulgarian flute, over Skype, with a Bulgarian musician in Washington, DC.
